If you asked me this when I was about 20 you'd probably be shocked at my answer...
How times have changed! It's a no brainer as they say. In other words yes, walking will definitely get you fit but walking also offers so much more, like keeping your mind active and in most cases offering you some peace & tranquility. Walking can also have a positive affect on your mental health too.
So do yourself a favour and get yourself off that couch!
Humans were not designed to sit down for long periods of time and sitting can cause so many health issues.
Whether you use walking as part of your weekly exercise plan, or like me, you walk to let your mind wonder whilst you focus on the beauty of what nature has to offer, walking can offer you so many benefits.
Personally I love walking in nature amongst trees and all things natural. It makes me feel like nothing else matters at that moment in time as it distracts me from the every day life of society.
So what health benefits does walking offer?
Increased cardiovascular and pulmonary (heart and lungs) fitness.
Reduced risk of heart disease and stroke.
Improved management of conditions such as hypertension (high blood pressure), high cholesterol, joint and muscular pain or stiffness and diabetes.
As walking is classed as a weight bearing exercise, it can also offer stronger bones and improved balance.
Walking groups.
Many people might be feeling lonely in their life or even isolated from society. Walking groups can be a great social activity offering opportunities to meet new frends and like minded people.
Build it up slowly.
If you're new to exercise or it's been a while since you've exercised, then it's always best to start with short walks one or two times a week. Aiming to build up to the recommended 30 minutes a day with brisk walking.
For overall development, you could even mix this up with either swimming or cycling or both.
Where will your walk take you?
Beach? Local park? Local area? Paths and tracks? Or national park such as the Lake district? If you feel a little self conscious you could even try walking in your back garden until you build your fitness and confidence.
Health concerns.
Even though moderate activities such as walking pose little health risk, should you have any medical conditions please consult with your doctor or GP before starting any new exercise program or physical activity.
