Why losing weight is more difficult for men after 50

For most people losing weight is probably their number one goal.

As you've probably guessed by now losing weight gets a little difficult for ageing men. But you don't have to give up just yet! Losing weight after 50 can be challenging but certainly not impossible!

With reducing levels of testosterone and the decrease in metabolic rate, muscle mass will now deteriorate over time. When muscle mass starts to diminish, our bodies burn less calories. our hormones that regulate appetite fluctuate and often our once active lifestyle becomes a thing of the past.

Hormonal changes can also affect appetite and fat distribution. Emotional factors like stress can have a negative affect on our mental health creating unhealthy eating habits which can also contribute to weight gain. Health conditions and medications may cause complications too. Life generally slows down as we age. With less obligations and less responsibilities you're now more likely to be less active which will contribute to burning less calories. You may have also reduced your hours at work or even be retired and taking life at a slower pace, again contributing to burning less calories. Decreasing your body fat and increasing your muscle mass will help decrease blood pressure, reduce the risk of diabetes, cancer, and heart disease, increase energy levels, boost confidence and have a positive affect on your mental health.

Attempting to lose weight later in life may present a few extra challenges but this doesn’t mean it’s impossible to maintain a fit and healthy lifestyle. With a balanced diet and regular exercise, weight loss is still achievable after the age of 50 and beyond.
